How Location Affects Life

Students examine geographical and human factors that affect personal and societal ways of life. Physical components such as climate, landform and relative location are discussed, expanding a learner's understanding of characteristics within northern and southern hemispheres, differing latitudes and longitudes. Population density, cost of living, and politics are considered as human factors impacting daily life. Regional examples review the interrelationship of geographical, climactic, and historical events that shape everyday life.

Explore different regions of the world and how they are changed by humans and geographic factors.

  1. Students will review their basic understanding of map and globe terms.
  2. Students will learn how geographers break the world into regions.
  3. Students will determine the human and physical characteristics that affect the lives of people all over the world.
  4. Students will understand how different areas have grown based upon their physical features.

  1. Thinking locally. Draw a labeled map of your community, complete with physical features. Now think about where most of the people in your community live. Does this match what the video said about the way people settle in areas? Why or why not? Do you think that the way a community forms is different from the way people locate themselves around the world? Discuss as a class.
  2. Latitude, Longitude, Lifestyle. Have students work in pairs or small groups. Have each student come up with latitude and longitude coordinates, either using a map or globe, or make them up. The students will then give their coordinates to their partner to find on the globe. Discuss where these coordinates are, what the people there might be like (what they wear, how they live, etc.), and how each place they find is different or similar to the others.
